KY Professionals Recovery Network

​​History and Background

The Kentucky Pharmacists Recovery Network (KYPRN) was established in 1986 in collaboration with the Kentucky Pharmacists Association (KPhA). Initially known as Pharmacists Helping Fellow Pharmacists, the program was created to support pharmacists struggling with substance use issues in a confidential, compassionate, and professional manner.

In 1998, legislation (KRS 315.126) was enacted to provide formal structure and sustainable funding for the program through a designated licensing fee. The Kentucky Board of Pharmacy formally appointed the Pharmacist Recovery Network (PRN) Committee in 1999 to guide and oversee the program’s operations.

The committee consists of pharmacists from across the Commonwealth, representing diverse practice settings and regions. It meets prior to  each regularly scheduled Board meeting to review petitions from pharmacists seeking license reinstatement and provides informed recommendations to the Board. 

Impact

Since 1986, KYPRN has helped over 500 pharmacists and pharmacy interns across Kentucky who are facing challenges related to substance use. The program promotes recovery, professional accountability, and public safety by providing a structured pathway for pharmacists and pharmacy interns to address their issues and continue to practice their profession safely.

KYPRN offers confidential assistance to Kentucky-licensed pharmacists and pharmacy interns who are experiencing problems related to substance use or mental health conditions that may affect their ability to practice safely.

Services include:

• Referrals to qualified treatment providers

• Monitoring and documentation of sobriety

• Ongoing support and accountability throughout recovery

KYPRN partners with licensed professionals specializing in addiction treatment to ensure that participants receive comprehensive, personalized care.
